Imagine…

… the imposing ruins of a medieval castle perched on a cliff, its massive bulk cutting a serrated line across the deepest blue of the summer sky,

… the river Anglin, lazily meandering between sunny meadows, cool woods and cliffs, challenging painters with its wonderful reflections, and here and there sliding its hundred rivulets over broad weirs that feed the water wheels of abandoned mills,

… the intricate stone carvings of a XIIth century chapel longing to be drawn from your bedroom window,

… the tumble of houses, roofs, turrets, terraces and gardens jostling for a place in the sun on the steep hillsides,

… the old rocky, cobbly pedestrian thoroughfares trodden for centuries between the 'Ville Haute' and 'Ville Basse',

… the flowers, the sunny sunflower fields, the hollyhocks growing wildly out of every nook and cranny, dahlias and cannas adorning ditches, and the troughs, displays, rows, borders and parterres that won Angles its title of 'Village Fleuri',

… and the village square with its cafes rich in local colour, where you can sit in the shade and watch the world go by.

Angles-sur-l'Anglin, a medieval village deep in unspoilt rural France, south of the Loire Valley on the border of Poitou-Charentes.  Officially classed as 'Un des plus Beaux Villages de France', it is a place imbued with charm peace and beauty, where time stands still and where every turn reveals a new vista, a cacophony of old tiled roofs, a small cottage or a grand house, a quaint detail or a delightful view,

… a painter's paradise where non-painters can also enjoy a wide range of activities, from bird-watching in the nearby Brenne Regional Park to 18 hole golf and casino at La Roche Posay (12km), walking, fishing, boating or simply relaxing by the pool.

... this is old France at its rural best, where time stands still.

The imposing ruins of the medieval chateau on a cliff some 50m high dominate the enchanting river setting.  The beautiful river Anglin is in the middle of the 'Three river valleys' of the Gartempe, Anglin and Creuse, with old mills, cliffs, caves, oak woods and peaceful meadows.  The area is steeped in history with old abbeys, churches, chateaux and a prehistoric site.

You can enjoy all kinds of activities such as walking, bird-watching (the Brenne Regional Park for seasoned twitchers is 15km away), boating, swimming, fishing, biking, horse-riding, rock-climbing, caving, golf, painting or simply relaxing.

The village offers cafes where local colour abounds, restaurants (one Michelin rated), the usual shops including pharmacy, baker, butcher, grocer and 'tabac', as well as antiques, local crafts etc.  There is a small market on Sundays and regular open-air cinema and concerts in the chateau, together with a range of cultural activities, including a Book Fair, during July and August with over 20000 visitors in 2007.  New to the village is a Book shop and bookbinding business , situated on the village square.  On the first Sunday in August every year a magnificent fireworks display attracts about 7000 people - not bad for a village with about 380 souls.
