Liz Butler is a professional working artist, specialising in watercolour. Trained at Liverpool and the Royal College of Art, she is a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and is represented by the Francis Kyle Gallery. She has combined painting and exhibiting regularly with teaching at various art colleges since leaving college in 1973. She teaches watercolour on a regular basis at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.
More recently she has taught on painting holidays, in Greece, the Dordogne and Angles sur l'Anglin with us. She firmly believes in encouraging students to find their own means of expression, with her on hand to advise on the managing of materials, as and when the need arises. She firmly holds that painting is like handwriting and will not press any single manner of painting upon her students. She is experienced in working with a range of abilities, from beginners through to experienced painters.
Her own work is mainly landscape, with a special area of interest in historic gardens. She also paints botanical subjects, and has been invited to exhibit with the Royal Horticultural Society. She has work in several private collections including the Government Art Collection, Earl of Harewood's Collection, Queen Mother's Collection, Abbot Hall Gallery, Cumbria. She has designed a series of stamps, celebrating Historic British Gardens for the Post Office and she and her work were featured in an Omnibus programme for the BBC.
Her work features in several publications; The Seasons , William Collins; Herbs and Spices, Frances Lincoln; The Watercolour Expert , Cassells; Watercolour Masters, Cassells; Artists Kew, Kew publications; Lair of the Leopard, Third Millenium Press.
